Spurs vs. Thunder — 2026–27 Season Opener

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 | 9:30 p.m. ET | Frost Bank Center, San Antonio | NBC / Peacock

A rematch of last season's Western Conference Finals kicks off the new campaign. The Spurs — who fell to the New York Knicks in five games for the 2026 title — host the Thunder, whom they beat in a hotly contested seven-game series that ended with a road win in Oklahoma City. Both teams enter as co-favorites for the 2026–27 championship (Spurs +250, Thunder +260), making this opener a true heavyweight clash.

Storylines

MVP vs. Defensive Anchor: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander enters coming off his second straight MVP (32.7 ppg) and averaged 29.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds across the seven WCF meetings. Victor Wembanyama will be the primary obstacle.

Spurs three-guard look: Head coach Mitch Johnson confirmed a bold starting five of De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper alongside Devin Vassell and Wembanyama.

Thunder almost back to full strength: Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell are healthy after missing portions of the WCF with injuries. Chet Holmgren is cleared to play after missing all of preseason with a quad issue.

Roster shifts: OKC traded Lu Dort to Atlanta in a cap-driven deal. San Antonio added veteran Tobias Harris, who is out for the opener with a left calf strain.
