Devin Booker's 29 points helped the Phoenix Suns overcome the loss of Kevin Durant to an ankle injury, as they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 104-93 on Tuesday night. Durant left the game with 3:51 remaining in the second quarter and did not return, heading to the locker room under his own power. The Suns later revealed that Durant had sustained an ankle injury, though they did not provide any further details. He finished the game with 13 points.

Despite winning the West Group B in the NBA Cup, the Suns were eliminated from the quarterfinals when Dallas beat Memphis. Booker, however, surpassed a significant career milestone, becoming the second-highest scorer in Suns history with 15,000 career points, trailing only Walter Davis (15,666). Do you guys know about Sweet D AKA The Greyhound?

San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama struggled in the first half, missing all seven of his shots, including six from beyond the arc. He found his rhythm in the second half, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Spurs teammate Devin Vassell led the team with 25 points off the bench, while Stephon Castle added 16 points.

For the Suns, Tyus Jones scored 16 points, while Royce O'Neale and Bradley Beal each contributed 10 points. The Suns started Oso Ighodaro at center in place of the injured Jusuf Nurkic, who is sidelined for at least a week due to a right thigh contusion. His backup at Center was Miles Plumlee, who finished with a Team High +- of +18.

The Suns opened the game with an 11-0 run before Castle scored for the Spurs. In a disappointing shooting performance, the Spurs were just 8-of-44 (18%) from three-point range.

I did a Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown of the Spurs win against the Warriors and called Anatomy of a Comeback. I decided to do the same thing with this Road Loss against the Suns and in it, it paints a pretty grim picture of how bad the team played for 3 quarters of the game and at times, still had a chance to comeback and steal it due to magnificent bench play from Vassell and Sochan but alas, it wasn't meant to be and they couldn't get enough stops. Pop likes to say it's a Game of Mistakes and the ones who make less typically win but man, the Spurs starters were hurting for long stretches missing open shots and defending poorly with missed reads and rotations. When Royce O'Neale hits you with a teardrop, there's no excuse for that.

When a game is broken down quarter by quarter, that's when you see if a player started bad and then reversed his fortunes only to have it reverse back. Plus, since you get the benefit of seeing how the opposition played, you will see just how efficiently and well they played.

Again, the Batting Averages tell a large part of how the game was played and if your team had more players with higher "averages" or in this case, Points Created Per Minute or PC Per Minute, it makes for strong evidence of why a team got the win by measuring each player's output for the time they were on the court.

Nikola Vucevic erupted for a season-high 39 points, while Ayo Dosunmu posted a triple-double with 27 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds, as the Chicago Bulls routed the San Antonio Spurs 139-124 on Thursday night. The Spurs were without top prospect Victor Wembanyama, who sat out due to a sore lower back.

Dosunmu's impressive performance marked the first triple-double of his four-year NBA career. Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with a season-high 28 points, while Devin Vassell added 17 points, but San Antonio dropped its third game in the last four.

Wembanyama, the highly anticipated 2023 NBA Draft prospect, is considered day-to-day with the back injury he suffered in Tuesday's loss to the Phoenix Suns. The Bulls, meanwhile, never trailed and set a season-high in points, including a scorching 73-point first half to take a commanding 16-point lead into the break.

Talen Horton-Tucker chipped in 13 points for the Bulls, who had six players score in double figures. Chris Paul had 12 points and nine assists for the Spurs in the losing effort.

Takeaways:

  • Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis continued his strong play, scoring 11 points after a career-high 20 against the Nets in his previous game.
  • Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan returned to the starting lineup after missing 13 games following thumb surgery, recording 16 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Zach LaVine set the tone early, draining a 3-pointer on the game's opening possession to kick off the Bulls' most prolific offensive performance this season.
  • Chicago shot a blistering 57.8% from the field, surpassing their previous season-best of 57% set against the Hawks on Nov. 22.
