Game 7 SAS @ LAC - Spurs lose Sochan for an extended period. Clippers Bench goes nuclear from 3. Amir Coffey?
Here is the Game Recap for Game 7:
NBA Game Recap Spurs @ Clippers 104-113
One would think that the Spurs with a 40 Point 1st Quarter to the Clippers 14 Point output would be enough for the Spurs to cruise to a W at the brand new home of the Clippers, The Intuit Dome. The Clippers had yet to win a game there. No Pop, No Problem... right?
Well, at the end of the 1st quarter, Jeremy Sochan was defending James Harden and on an attempted steal, somehow his thumb took a hit and now we know, fractured thumb. My conservative estimate is 4-8 Weeks. 6 Weeks at the fastest but these our the Spurs and they take injuries seriously. But the immediate effect, we saw how it played out. Already down Devin Vassell and Tre Jones, and of course Coach Pop, Now add Sochan too? Assistant Coach Mitch Johnson tried to stay the course and go to an even shorter bench except for adding Sandro Mamukelashvili for some run. Mamu is pretty good offensively but defensively, he's a step slow.
Here is video for when Jeremy got injured
The game changed in the 2nd quarter and you call that the Sochan Effect was happening. It mattered not that Wembanyama got 9 Blocks. Because for as much as a disruptive force he was Inside, the Clippers were bullseye from behind the arc. Amir Coffey, going into this game averaged less than 7 PPG. On this night, he shot 5 of 6 from 3 and finished the night going 8 of 10 from the field for a huge 21 points. Amir Coffey finished with a PC Per Min Score of 1.000 #Unreal
The Spurs kept the lead but it just kept shrinking and shrinking until a strange turnover of a lob from Wembanyama to Mamukelashvili(Say that 3 times fast) and another 3 pointer and all of sudden the Clippers got the lead and they just built on it. The Spurs players played extended minutes and they just didn't have it to come back.
So what went well? Victor Wembanyama was really awesome, except for the high number of 3 point attempts with low conversion rate. Chris Paul continued his uptick in performance and Julian Champagnie was solid especially from behind the 3 point line. If ONLY he could have made more of them. Look at how many minutes the Starters played. I don't recall a night when Champagnie ever played 38 Minutes in 1 game. Wembanyama finished with a PC Per Min Score of 1.044
Wembanyama's Stellar Night
With Pop still dealing with his medical issue, no one from the Spurs has publicly revealed what exactly the issue is but they say it is serious but he is in good spirits,
The Spurs face the Rockets in Houston tonight. 3rd time in a week or so. Perhaps our team can gut one out and win one for Pop.
