Points Created Scores for Game 2 Spurs v Bucks 111-121 L 1-2

San Antonio Spurs
McDermott .844 27.000 In the last game against the Nuggets, I pointed out that Doug was floating outside and not making enough of an impact with his shooting or floor game. Well tonight, he brought it and put together a 25 point game on 9-13 shooting with a career-best 7 3s made on 11 attempts. He even added 4 rebounds with 2 assists. So for this game, his teammates were looking for him often but as Sean Elliott pointed out in the postgame wrap-up, the team has not yet figured out how best to utilize his 3 point shot. Sean talked about how when the Spurs run a Flare Screen, if they flatten it out, then it's the same player the Warriors run for Thompson, a wide-open 3 for McDermott but the guys lacked patience and went away from him and Derrick instead attacked the rim for a score. Read and recognition comes with time but man, if the Spurs can start to gain experience and recognize situations for McBuckets, you have to like the potential.

Johnson .431 12.500 Keldon is still scoring well but his rebound totals are down. The effort is unquestionable. He just needs to pick his spots as to when to use more energy defensively. His shot has a lot of arc. It reminded me of the old term, Rainbow Jumper. He and Giannis have lots of arc in their shot. He scored 20 points shooting 9-18 from the field, he missed all 4 3s he attempted and added 2 boards, 3 assists, with 1 steal.

Poeltl .629 22.000 Another tough matchup for Jakob. Last night, he faced Nikola Jokic,. This time, it's Giannis Antetokounmpo. Jakob focused more defensively sticking to his role as the Spurs' #1 Defensive Big. Again, the job here is not to stop, but to make them work and in doing so, make Giannis less efficient. For this game, Jakob and the team forced some tough shots but just as important, forced Giannis to give up the ball so he took fewer shots than he normally averages.
For this game, the Austrian Alp shot 5-9 from the field to score 10 points with 8 boards, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

White .613 19.000 Derrick, as I have pointed out, is a 2-Way player and his game is very well rounded. He can attack from multiple locations and shot 6-12 scoring 14 Points. He shot 1 of 5 from 3, 1-1 from the line, got 2 rebounds, 8 assists to lead the team, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. What he's really stellar at is taking charges. By my count, I saw 4 charges taken. That's one way to create turnovers.

Murray .500 17.000 Dejounte is on this trend where his money jump shot seems slightly off. His floor game is still solid as he got 9 boards while dishing out 7 assists, with 1 steal. He shot 5-14 from the field, missed both attempts from the 3 point line, and yet again, had zero trips to the charity stripe. What is up with that? The pace they are playing is faster than last season for sure. To seal wins, a team needs to be able to get to the line. For as many shots as he takes inside, he should have gotten at least 2 FTs.

Walker IV .480 12.000 Lonnie got to shoot a lot in this game and shot a respectable 7-15 from the field for 17 points. He added 2 FTs and made 1 3 pointer out of 7 shots that he took from range. To say that anyone not named McDermott wasn't hitting a lot of 3s is saying how off the team was from behind the arc. Lonnie played pretty well and he made some crazy acrobatic shots in this game. I still think he needs to slow it down some and draw contact. I will keep saying that until it sinks in and he starts to earn those calls.

Vassell .026 0.500 Devin was ineffective in this game. There is no other way to say it. The scores say so much here. He scored 4 points on 2-6 from the field. He missed all 4 3 pointers in his 19 minutes. He had an amazing opening game, but now Devin's PC score is trending the wrong way. He got 3 boards and 1 steal. When you are a good 3 and D defender, you get matched up against talented scorers, so Devin gets to fight with Kris Middleton and Pat Connaughton. That's pretty tough to do. However, you cannot let people like Grayson Allen and George Hill outplay you.

Eubanks .462 6.000 Drew is providing some steady backup minutes for Pop. He played 13 minutes and finished with 4 points on 2-4 from the field with 4 boards and 1 assist. Drew got a nice dunk off a beautiful setup from Tre Jones. He was better with the ball and had zero turnovers. Just keep at it.

Bates-Diop 0.000 0.000 Pop emptied the bench and Keita missed the 1 shot that he took but got a rebound.

Jones .200 1.000 In 5 minutes of play. Tre scored 2 points going 1-2 from the field.

Forbes .071 1.000 Bryn played 14 minutes, took 4 3s, and made 1 and he got 2 boards with 1 assist. 3  games into the season and he scored a total of 3 points. There is no way that even the most supportive of Bryn fans can say he is playing well at this time.

Primo 3.000 3.000 in 1 minute of play, Josh got a rebound and putback. He's got 5 points in those appearances and his Offensive Rating is through the roof. If Bryn's current downward trajectory continues, would it hurt to play Josh some?

Landale -1.000 -1.000 In his 1 minute of play, Jock got a turnover.

Young DNP-CD Thaddeus did not play in this game

Weiskamp DNP-CD Joe did not play in this game.

The Spurs were involved in yet another back and forth game with a team that many analysts consider upper echelon and they hung tough with the Bucks until they reeled off a 10-2 run late. The Spurs tried to answer the run but too many missed or rushed shots sealed the W for Coach Mike Budenholer and his team.

POP WATCH - All-Time Wins Record
Pop still has 1,311 wins after his team lost to the Bucks. He still needs 25 more to break Don Nelson's record. Coach Mike Budenholzer is part of the Pop tree of coaching having started his NBA Coaching career as a Video Coordinator for the Spurs. Coach Bud was recruited to Basketball for Coach Pop at Pomona Pitzer College at the D3 Level. That summer, Pop actually left to join Larry Brown's Staff for the Spurs before Bud arrived at college. The Sagehens of Pomona Pitzer connection is strong. Here is Mike Budenholzer Class of 1992.

Team Totals Points Created
Spurs 120 (The Starting 5 scored 97.5) The Star of the game for the Spurs was Doug McDermott with the Career High 7 3 Pointers Made. McBuckets was En Fuego and if he got just a little more help from the other shooters, this game could have turned for the Spurs.
Spurs Starting 5 PC Per Game resulted in 97.5 of the 120 Total Points Created.

Bucks 127.5 The Star of the game for the Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo. He almost got a Triple-Double but having said that, the Spurs still had a chance at the game with a few minutes left in the 4th Quarter. You knew that Khris Middleton was going to provide support scoring and that Holiday was going to provide solid play from his position. You do not count on Connaughton and Hill to make all those 3s. But they did.  And now they are off to a 2-1 start.
Bucks Starting 5 PC Per Game resulted in 86.5 of the 127.5 Total Points Created.

For the 2nd night in a row, the Spurs lost the battle of the benches.

Milwaukee Bucks
G. Antetokounmpo .767 23.000 Giannis played really well. Just not at former MVP level. The Spurs forced 6 turnovers which were great. I had hoped that the Spurs could hold him to below .900 and through Jakob with some Team D help, they managed to hold him below .800. Having said that, .767 is still stellar. 21 points with 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 blocks. He got the star treatment late as the Spurs set up perfect rotations to draw charges but instead of turnover, personal foul, he got basket good, And 1. Pretty frustrating.

Middleton .571 20.000 Khris is a seasoned scorer and that mid-range jump shot is pretty money. Not much of a floor game but every time the Bucks needed a bucket, they could rely on Khris getting involved. Despite the good shooting, the Spurs forced 5 turnovers. If only those turnovers were all turned into points.

Holiday .580 14.500 Jrue in his first game back since he sprained his ankle was pretty steady. He shot 6-9 scoring 16 points while shooting 3-4 from behind the arc. He added 4 boards with 5 assists while also committing 5 turnovers. Again, same deal as Middleton.

Connaughton .514 19.000 Pat played extended minutes as a floor spacer. He matched Jrue's scoring output and those 16 points were on 6-9 shooting with 3-5 from behind the arc. He added 7 boards and 1 steal. That's a great effort from a role player.

Allen .385 10.000 Grayson was a mixed bag for the Bucks. He made 4-11 from the field with 2 3 pointers for 10 points. He did not produce too much in the rest of the box score, but he got 5 boards, 1 assist with 1 steal. As a starter, he performed the least. But since the Bucks got more output from George Hill, that was enough to offset Allen's down game.

Hill .640 16.000 I hate it whenever there's a former Spurs coming back to San Antonio. George even still lives in San Antonio in the off-season. He was the key difference-maker and shot 5-6 from the field and 3-3 from behind the arc resulting in 15 points with 2 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

T. Antetokounmpo .318 7.000 Thanassis is in the regular rotation for Milwaukee while they get over injures to players like Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis. His 7 rebounds along with 4 points gave his team good minutes. Not very effective but that 21 minutes of time helped provide rest for his brother.

Nwora .571 12.000 Julius was another key off the bench player. That block that he got on Tre Jones was unreal. Hey, Tre! Use the rim to fend off the defender or just hit the backboard first. Julius shot 3-7 from the field and made 1 3 for 7 points. He also got 6 boards, 1 assist, and 2 blocks.

Robinson .500 6.500 Rookie Justin Robinson gave his team some good minutes. He finished with 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal.

Mamukelashvili -0.083 -0.500 6 minutes for the Rookie Big. He didn't do much but man that last name is hard. So, we broke down how to say Sandro's last name. It's pronounced. Mamoo-Kay-Lash-Vee-Lee.

Hood DNP-CD Rodney did not play in this game.

Kalaitzakas DNP-CD Georgios did not play in this game.

The defending Champs were challenged by our Spurs. I think that they were able to outlast the Spurs due to having a true superstar former MVP on the court. Had 1 charge been called, a bigger lead would have been reduced. It was a turnover plagued game and while our Spurs had their chances, the Bucks gritted out a W.
