Points Created Scores for Game 2 Spurs @ Nuggets 96-102 L 1-1

San Antonio Spurs
McDermott .097 3.000 I said in the previous PC Review, Doug was brought to the team to shoot and make 3s, tonight he made just 1 and did not do enough to help his team, despite the close loss. He scored 5 points, made just 1 3 point shot, got 3 boards, and 1 assist... in 31 minutes. That's a lot of time to not get more floor stats. In his last game, he got zeroes in those stats. When he isn't scoring, this means he is just floating outside not contributing. His value is when he makes shots and if he's floating, then he better make shots. 5 Points says he didn't make enough.

Johnson .716 26.500 Energy and Intensity. Matched up against Aaron Gordon, Keldon showed his skills as a Small Ball 4. His size at 6-6 225 lb against 6-8 235 lbs. Gordon who got so frustrated, he jawed with Keldon some. Big Body went to work and showed that he added more moves to his arsenal. We already know about the awkward and slow Euro Step. He added a Floater as well. Keldon scored 27 on 12 of 18 from the field. He also shot 3-4 from the FT line and attempted 2 3s while getting 4 boards, 2 assists, and 3 steals. If the rest of his friends were just a little more efficient, they could have stolen this road win.

Poeltl .654 17.000 A tough matchup against Nikola Jokic, Jakob had his work cut out for him. He's the Spurs' #1 Defensive Big against Jokic and isn't expected to stop him, but he is supposed to make him work. All of that is predicated by the need for him to stay out of foul trouble. He picked up 2 early and the Spurs were able to use Drew to keep the team close. The Austrian Alp shot 7-9 from the field and went 1-2 from the line to score 15 points with 8 boards, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

White .527 19.500 Derrick is a Colorado native. When you get the Nugget feed, you hear them talk about Derrick's past and his path to pros but by and large, they know he's solid. In this game, he would be one of the late double-team attackers whenever Jokic went into the paint. Yes, that guy's gravity is such that the Spurs need to send doubles often. Offensively, DWhite had to work to score. He shot 5-13 scoring 16 Points. He shot 2 of 7 from 3, 4-4 from the line, got 2 rebounds, 8 assists to lead the team, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. He did his part to try to get this W too.

Murray .429 15.000 Dejounte was not very efficient. His shot selection was suspect and he seemed to be pressing some in this game. He worked the boards collecting 9 while dishing out 6 assists, with 2 steals. He shot 7-18 from the field, he made 1 of 4 from the 3 point line, and had zero trips to the charity stripe. Not his best output and while the effort was there, the result was not.

Walker IV .350 7.000 Lonnie shot 2-6 for 6 points from the field, including 1 3 pointer in 20 minutes. That's not what the team needs from the 6th Man. 4 Rebounds. 2 assists, and a steal is good but this game needed more from him and others, but this season, the Lonnie fans cannot use the excuse that DeMar or Rudy or Patty is taking time away from him.

Vassell .325 6.500 Devin as the 7th Man, just like Lonnie, didn't impact the game enough. He scored 6 points while shooting 2-7 from the field including 1 3 pointer in 20 minutes. After such a great opening game, Devin's PC score took quite the fall. He got 4 boards, 1 assist, and 2 steals. His role has been expanded, he too, needs to be able to provide support scoring. The Spurs could do if either Devin or Lonnie have an off-game. But it's tough to win both of them do.

Eubanks .385 5.000 Drew came in early due to Jakob getting into early foul trouble. Jokic is so tough but the Spurs got an okay effort from Eubanks. He played 13 minutes and finished with 4 points on 2-2 from the field with 4 boards and 2 assists. 3 Turnovers thought. That needs to be addressed.

Bates-Diop 0.000 0.000 DNP-Coach It would seem that on a Back to Back that Pop is just making sure that he has some rested players so Keita sat.

Jones -1.000 -1.000 1 Minute of play. Tre registered 1 turnover in that time.

Forbes -0.100 -1.000 Bryn played 10 minutes, took 2 3s, got 1 board and 1 assist. 2 games into the season and he hasn't scored a single point. He took good shots, they just have not fallen. To lose a game by 6? The Spurs could have used some scoring from him as well.

Primo 0.000 0.000 DNP-Coach It would seem that on a Back to Back that Pop is just making sure that he has some rested players so Josh sat.

Landale 0.000 0.000 DNP-Coach It would seem that on a Back to Back that Pop is just making sure that he has some rested players so Jock sat.

Young -0.222 -2.000 Thaddeus played his 1st game as a Spur and for those 9 minutes, he looked like Luka Samanic without a 3 point shot. He got 2 points on 1-3 with zeroes for the rest of the box score. He looked lost and played small when matched up against Jokic. He needs to play more to get a better feel for the offense. He has the tools but needs the know-how. He can only go up from here.

The first road game was opening night in Denver for the home team. The Nuggets fans

POP WATCH - All-Time Wins Record
Pop still has 1,311 wins after his team lost to the Nuggets. He still needs 25 more to break Don Nelson's record. Denver broadcaster Scott Hastings talked about how Mike Malone got his 1st coaching opportunity due to Pop. Pop got him on to Mike Brown's Cleveland Coaching Staff. Malone said that he and Pop talk all the time and that Pop is a great sounding board for him. They had a soundbite of Pop saying, "I don't know why I keep helping you out. You haven't done one thing to help me win a basketball game." That's Pop and for that, Mike Malone is grateful.

Team Totals Points Created
Spurs 95 The Star of the game for the Spurs was Keldon Johnson. He was giving the Nuggets fits all evening with his scoring. If only the rest of the team provided close to the same type of efficiency.
Spurs Starting 5 PC Per Game resulted in 81 of the 95 Total Points Created.

Nuggets 102.5 The Star of the game for the Nuggets is easily Nikola Jokic. Just pencil his name in anytime the Nuggets play. Despite his high output, the Spurs were in this game until the end, and had it not been for Facu Campazzo and JaMychal Green, to provide additional statistical support, who knows? They survive and get off to a 2-1 start.
Nuggets Starting 5 PC Per Game resulted in 70 of the 102.5 Total Points Created. That means the Spurs lost the battle of the benches.

Denver Nuggets
Gordon .183 5.500 Aaron had to deal with Keldon Johnson. He lost that matchup. It always warms my heart when a Spurs player drafted late plays better than one who went high lottery. For the game, Gordon scored 8 points with 5 boards and 1 assist.

Barton .453 14.500 Will played a pretty good game providing 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. He shot 5-13 from the field and added 2 3s. At times, you don't think he's doing all that much and then you look up the box score and find stats. For him, he's a glue guy and they must have thought enough about his skills and fit to keep him while trading away Gary Harris to Orlando to bring in Aaron Gordon.

Porter Jr. -0.037 -1.000 Michael hit that late dagger 3 that pretty much sealed the win. Prior to that, he had been playing pretty badly. He's 6-10 and got 1 board and 1 steal. Also had 4 turnovers. If only he missed that 3, the Spurs had late chances.

Jokic 1.324 45.000 Yes, he's that good. Nikola is a Franchise Level star that was drafted with Pick 41 in 2014. Again, when you get the Nuggets Feed, you hear all kinds of praise for his game. I heard the Sombor Shuffle a few times today. In case you did not know. Sombor, Serbia is where he's from. And while that move is really clean, it's his passing vision that makes him much better. He got 7 assists but could have gotten more to get the Triple-Double if his guys finished better. Jakob tried to body him, occupy space, got help from digs and double-teams and all the things that Pop wanted to try in an effort to make him work. He's always going to produce so whenever the Spurs have to compete against a player like that, they try to limit THE OTHERS. Despite the prodigious numbers from Jokic, Jakob and Drew did what they could, and well...it was a 6 point loss. When you go through the Points Created, you can see which OTHERS played well and which ones did okay or not okay, that's why we take the time to run these stats.  Here's a link so you can see what The Sombor Shuffle looks like. As far as I can tell, he's the only one to do it. Someone will try and copy it, I'm sure.

Morris .207 6.000 Monte has a penchant for scoring against the Spurs. He made 6-12 from the field with 1 3 pointer that resulted in 13 points. While Jamal Murray recovers from the ACL Tear, Morris will be the starter. He did not produce too much in the rest of the box score, but he got 2 boards, 1 assist with 1 steal. Those 13 points were more than Walker, Vassell, Forbes, and Jones combined.

Dozier .381 8.000 P.J. scored 7 points while shooting 3-6 with 1 3 pointer in 21 minutes. He also added 2 boards with 3 assists.

Campazzo .658 12.500 Facundo is one of The Others that helped secure the victory for Denver. Both him and teammate Monte Morris are the shortest players in the league at 5-10. The locals call him Facu and in 19 minutes, he scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting and added 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, and surprisingly, 1 block. Man! Facu. Those Argentines know how to ball.

J. Green .111 2.000 There are 2 J. Greens on Denver. This one is Jeff and he did not play particularly well in his 18 minutes. 2 points, 2 assists, and 1 board.

J. Green .679 9.500 This one is JaMychal and he played great in his 14 minutes. He scored 10 points on 4-5 from the field making 2 3's. He added 2 boards, 1 assist, and 3 steals.

Rivers .031 0.500 Austin did not play particularly well. Perhaps the hit he took from Dejounte threw off his game as he was down on the court for some time but was able to resume. He scored 3 points with 1 board, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Let's face it. The Nuggets will go only as far as Nikola Jokic can take them. He is the building block for that team and is a gifted bigman. In NBA history, the only Center to ever lead the league in  Total Assists in a season is Wilt Chamberlain. 702 Total Assists was enough to lead the NBA in 1967-1968. Can Jokic beat that total? Last season he had 599 and this season, again, until Jamal Murray recovers from the ACL reconstruction, Jokic is the guy. JaMychal Green and Facundo Campazzo's 2 .600+ scores combined with Jokic's insane 1.324 was enough to offset any good the Spurs could muster. The rest of the Nuggets team is built to spread the floor and give him triple-threat options and on many nights, that's enough to get a W.
