Points Created Scores for Game 1 Spurs V Magic 123-97 W 1-0

San Antonio Spurs
McDermott .364 8.000 Brought to the team to shoot and make 3s, he made 2 back-to-back that helped break open the game. Other than scoring and fouls, Doug registered Zeroes in all the other stats. It probably means nothing but against the Magic, it is something to point out.

Johnson .357 10.000 Energy and Intensity. It looked strange that Keldon, as a Small Ball 4 at 6-6 225 lbs. would sometimes match up against 7-1 235 lbs. Center Mo Bamba. Sean Elliot said it best, Big Body has the physicality to handle him. That Euro Step move looks awkward but he makes it work.

Poeltl .917 27.500 Last year, Jakob was most definitely not a primary option. He still isn't Option 1 but he has moved up with the departure of the vets DeRozan, Mills, and Gay. Jakob's attempts that we have seen in the past mainly consisted of putbacks, a dive cut option for driving layup or dunk, or passing angle short pass to a floater. In essence, he's Tiago Splitter without a Reverse Layup. Perhaps, if he added that shot, it would help him clear congestion in the paint where he can use the rim to help fend off would-be defenders. For the Spurs to play a more balanced brand of hoops, Pop needs his bigs to have limited shots, be strong defensively, and be able to pass from the post. That pass he threw to a cutting McDermott from the High Post and the other one he threw on the divecut from Keldon Johnson were beautiful. Dejounte Murray led the team with 8 assists, what's surprising is Jakob finished with 7. The Austrian Alp played HUGE and added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

White .567 17.000 People were worried about White's 3 Point Accuracy during the preseason. I am of the opinion that the only thing that matters during that time is players stay healthy and then, get some run, and build chemistry. If the shots were taken in the flow of the offense, then even if missed, it was still a good attempt. Against Orlando, DWhite went to work on rookie Jalen Suggs and anyone else who got in his way. He shot 6-11 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc. with 4 rebounds and assists with 1 steal. A typical DWhite game.

Murray .565 17.500 Dejounte got 6 rebounds and 8 assists with 4 steals. Both him and White hounded Orlando's perimeter players into turnovers which led to more possessions and easy baskets. He didn't shoot very well but you can see that the emphasis to shoot more 3s are there but also, his defensive intensity picked up late when the run was on.

Walker IV .600 15.000 We have been clamoring for him to be more of a scoring threat. Since DeRozan is no longer a Spur, this team needs that from him as the 6th Man. His floor game picked up with 6 rebounds and 3 assists along with 1 block and steal. He attempted the most 3s with 9 and got 3 to drop. I think many of us want him to attack and earn trips to the line and I saw that he wants to go but still, he adds difficulty to his drives instead of taking a more direct route. You see the double-pump and twisting as he attacks. It is my hope that since he has access to Manu Ginobili that he learns to invite contact. We all expect more and we all see how athletic he is. It's time for his mind to catch up to his athleticism. If he figures it out, he'll be a Jedi worthy of the name, SkyWalker.

Vassell .920 23.000 Devin as the 7th Man was pretty amazing against the Magic. If you watch how he positions himself defensively, it is worth paying attention. The way he slides his feet and peeks to see Man and Ball and then half-step or slides to increase his field of view. This is cerebral stuff he does and exactly why PATFO wanted him. He's making good when he was projected to be one of the best 3 and D prospects from his draft class and his game reminds me of the 1999 Championship Team, Sean Elliott. They both have +3 Wingspans for Defense and the 3 Ball is nice. On the 2 open ones, it is interesting to note that instead of a straight Catch and Shoot, he dribbled once, set his feet, and swish. Some say that extra dribble throws off a shooter but last night, the ball movement had the Magic scrambling defensively and Devin waiting long enough to have a cup of Coffee.

Eubanks .571 8.000 Drew's left and right-hand hook shots are classic old-school basketball. The physical nature of his game is raw but he's learning to harness it so he stops committing fouls. Solid bit of everything in his box score stats. You can see how athletic he is, especially on that weakside block he got on Hampton. Nice backup minuets from Drew.

Bates-Diop .545 6.000 Keita made every shot he took. He scored 7 Points in 11 Minutes and added 1 rebound. I said in my Season Preview Podcast that Keita beat out Luka Samanic and Al Farouq-Aminu to make the roster. He's a willing defender and has a smooth stroke from the outside. He needs to make the most of his limited opportunities but his physical tools are intriguing. He is 6-8w/7-3 Wingspan.

Jones .500 4.000 Tre came on the bench in the 4th and just moved the ball around to help facilitate the offense. He scored 4 points on 3 shots and added 1 assist. As the season goes on, these are the types of games where he needs to build up his overall game to convince Pop of more court time.

Forbes -0.667 -4.000 Yeah, all negatives but in the grand scheme of things, Bryn's role is to open up the middle for drives by making open shots. He took 4 shots with 3 from behind the arc and missed them all. They were good looks but did not fall. While we all want the Spurs players to score, for Bryn, we will just say, "Good effort!"

Primo .600 3.000 Josh in his 1st game as a rookie got on the court as the Spurs were up huge late. He took a confident 3 pointer from the deep right of the arc and wiggled in for his only score.

Landale .500 2.000 Jock in his 1st game as a rookie provided an all-around effort in 4 minutes of play. He got 1 of each for these categories, point, rebound, assist, and block with zero turnovers and fouls.

Young Thaddeus was the only player to not play. He registered a DNP-Coach's Decision

Opening night was a fun watch. The team had a slow start in the 1st quarter with the Magic up 7 points early but then the Spurs started to press their defense more and with a short bench, it was only a matter of time when the team would lay the hurt on the Magic. It was pretty much a 10 point game in the middle of the 3rd Quarter and then an eruption of points happened all punctuated by Devin Vassell. The Magic were missing some very key players. They still don't have former lottery picks, Jonathan Isaac and Markell Fultz who will be out for some time after reconstructive knee surgeries and they also did not have Gary Harris and E'Twaun Moore to some minor leg issues. But still, it was a fairly solid showing for our Spurs.

POP WATCH - All-Time Wins Record
Pop now has 1,311 wins after his team beat the Magic. He needs 25 more to break Don Nelson's record. At 1 time before he came back to the Spurs, Pop was an Assistant Coach for Nelly at Golden State. It's not unusual to find Pop in San Francisco in a Wine Shop in the offseason.

Team Totals Points Created
Spurs 137 The Star of the game for the Spurs was Jakob Poeltl. He was the best big on the court and his passing was on-point. A close runner-up was Devin Vassell. The Spurs got good balance throughout with consistent play and effort. Just another efficient Pop Spurs game.

Magic 88 A true blowout where there isn't much good to talk about other than Mo Bamba early?

Orlando Magic
F. Wagner .531 17.000 Franz in his rookie debut did some things right and played a good game. He showed a little of everything with 12 points, 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, an a block.

Carter .921 17.500 Wendell in limited time showed intriguing play. In 19 minutes he scored 13 points with 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Hence the high .900+ score.

Bamba .833 22.500 Mo is finally showing the promise that made him an intriguing lottery pick. You often hear the saying, "You cannot teach size." Mo is 7 Feet Tall which makes him 1 inch shorter than Jakob. But while Poeltl has a 7-2 Wingspan, Bamba's is 7-10! Last year I opined that it's strange to see him shoot 3s but his stroke is pretty clean and he shoots it confidently. Orlando has 2 solid bigs in Carter and Bamba. That's something to build on.

Anthony .150 4.500 Cole seemed like he wanted to take it to Dejounte but way more often than not, he got the short of the stick. When switched to Derrick or Devin or Lonnie, it was pretty much the same result. 10 points with 5 boards and 4 assists in 30 minutes is not efficient.

Suggs -0.083 -2.500 Jalen's 1st game as a rookie was not a good showing for him. He took 14 shots in 30 minutes making 3 total with 1 from behind the arc. 1 rebound, assist, and steal along with 10 points, like Anthony, is not efficient. As the Magic's Top pick from this season, he will need to play much better than this.

Ross .426 11.500 Terrance with some decent scoring production off the bench. He deserves to be on a better team but he toils away in Orlando. When you get only the visiting feed, you hear lots of different observations. Apparently, Ross is now the Magic's leader in most games played as a member of the Magic.

Hampton .288 7.500 R.J.is known for being a solid outside shooter but on this day, he surprisingly finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, with 1 steal.

Bradzekis .053 1.000 Ignas is a 2-Way Contract player and against the Spurs, in 19 minutes he finished with 2 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal. For him to play that many minutes shows that their depth is pretty shallow.

M. Wagner .467 7.000 Mo is the older brother of teammate, Franz Wagner. It's sometimes really cool to see brothers play on the same team and while the overall result wasn't good for the Magic, you can see some built-in on-court chemistry in them. Mo will do most of his damage inside while Franz has more range. They both played at Michigan and for Team Germany, internationally. His role will be to do dirty work and mix in a 3 to help open up the middle.

Lopez .154 2.000 Robin played and got 4 points with 3 rebounds. He's played for so many teams recently that it's hard to keep track. One thing you can depend on though, the Sideshow Bob Cut is still there.

With so many key players out and with a rookie Head Coach in Jamahl Mosely, the only thing they could do to compete was to play close to mistake-free ball. For the bulk of the 1st Quarter when they got off to an early 7 point lead and then part of the 3rd, when they cut the Spurs lead to 8 points, the Magic had us a bit worried, and then, the Spurs clamped down defensively and won the game going away.
